Day 4: VLORE - KOTOR (Montenegro)
There will be a lecture in the lounge and we’ll arrive in Vlore at the beginning of the morning. Join us for an excursion to Berat and Apollonia. The center of Berat is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains rare examples of Ottoman-style architecture. Although Berat is now a major tourist site, it has managed to retain its easy-going charm and friendly atmosphere. We’ll enjoy lunch during our excursion and then continue on to the largest archeological site in Albania: Apollonia. Apollonia was founded in 588 BC by Greek colonists from Corfu and Corinth. Julius Caesar rewarded Apollonia with the status of “free city” for supporting him during the Great Roman Civil War. The future Emperor Augustus completed his studies here. The picturesque ruins within the city walls include a small theatre and the elegant pillars on the restored facade of the city's administrative center. After our tour, we’ll return on board and begin cruising to Kotor. Enjoy an Italian-themed evening on board. Our ship will cruise through the night.
Day 5: BAY OF KOTOR - KOTOR (Montenegro)
There will be a lecture in the lounge as we spend the morning cruising through the Bay of Kotor. Once called Europe's southernmost fjord, it is actually a ria with many calm inlets and has been inhabited since antiquity. The abundant rainfall and mild climate explain the bay’s overabundance of lush vegetation. Our ship will arrive in Kotor by late morning. We’ll leave for a guided tour on foot of this lovely city. We’ll visit Saint Tryphon’s Cathedral, originally built in the 12th century but reconstructed after several earthquakes, as well as the maritime museum. We’ll return on board at the end of the afternoon and begin to cruise towards Dubrovnik. Tonight's dinner will be followed by dancing, and we’ll arrive in Dubrovnik during the night.
Day 6: DUBROVNIK (Croatia)
Join us for a tour of Dubrovnik, known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”. The former Republic of Ragusa is famous for its medieval walls and its wide variety of historical architecture. We’ll see the Dominican Friary, its lovely Gothic cloister, and its extraordinary museum of religious art with several valuable paintings, including a triptych by Nikola Bozidarevic; the Rector’s Palace, once the seat of the government and now a museum; and the cathedral, re-built after it crumbled to dust in the great earthquake of 1667. We’ll also visit Onofrio’s Fountains, St. Blaise's Church (18th century) and Sponza Palace - a superb Gothic-Renaissance structure. After lunch, enjoy some free time in Dubrovnik. We suggest you walk along the walls (1) which completely enclose the old city and are about 1.25 miles long and can reach 82 feet high. Tonight will be our gala dinner and evening.
