DAY 2: NAPLES
All meals served on board. The morning will be dedicated to a tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum. A reminder of the violent forces that lie deep inside Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii is Europe’s most compelling archaeological site and one of Italy’s most visited tourist attractions.
Herculaneum's fate runs parallel to Pompeii. Destroyed by an earthquake in 62 AD, the subsequent eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD saw it submerged in a sea of mud that essentially fossilized the city. Hundreds of years later, archaeologists excavated these two cities and found everything perfectly preserved by the volcano's ash. Discover the wealth of archaeological finds, from ancient advertisements and stylish mosaics, to carbonized furniture and inhabitants.
We’ll spend the afternoon on an excursion to Solfatara, a shallow dormant volcanic crater that still emits jets of steam. This has been a roadside attraction near Naples since the times of the Roman historian Strabo (66 BC to 24 AD), who described a visit here. The Romans believed that Vulcan, the god of fire, worked here, and ruins of a Roman bath still exist at the western side of the crater, with sulfur seeping through the bricks.
We’ll then continue our tour with a panoramic visit of Italy's third-largest city which is one of its oldest, most eccentric, and most delicious: Naples. We’ll discover the must-see sites such as Old Naples, the Royal Palace of Naples, and the Cappella Sansevero, containing the masterpiece Veiled Christ, renowned world over for the remarkable tissue-like quality of the marble. We’ll return on board our ship and begin to cruise towards Milazzo. Tonight’s soirée will have a Neapolitan theme. Our ship will cruise through the night.
