The coach sets off from Bernkastel to Idar Oberstein. In the past, the abundance of agate, jasper and amethyst deposits in the area around Idar Oberstein made the town a centre for gemstone cutting and polishing, and this has continued to the present day. We begin our visit with the historic gemstone grinding mill. Since the 15th century, the local deposits of precious gemstones have been cut and polished in the mills, where the enormous sandstone grinding wheels were operated using the hydraulic power of the river. The last operating mill closed in the middle of the 20th century. Your guide will take you through the mill and help you learn about this aspect of the work done in these grinding mills of yesteryear. You will see some small mineral and rock samples, found solely in the Idar Oberstein region, as well as gemstones that were cut and ground many centuries ago. The film “The secret of gemstones” gives an insight into the source, the extraction and the processing of this truly unique treasure. Next there is a transfer to the town centre of Idar Oberstein, where there is a guided walking tour of the historic old town. Here you will uncover the history, legends and attractions of the town. You will see the exceptional “Felsenkirche”, a church built into a natural niche in the rocks which was constructed in the 15th century and Castle Bosselstein (outside only). There will be some free time for you to visit any one of the many museums in town before re-joining your coach to transfer back to Bernkastel.
