ref DSA: Extended visit to Varazdin, Lake Balaton and Tihany

Leave by coach from Sisak for the Vara?din, the center and seat of the County of Vara?din, about 50 miles north of Zagreb. It is one of the tourist hot spots in Northern Croatia. The city center is often compared to Vienna and was miraculously saved from the conflicts in the 20th century. Within the relatively small area of the Old Town are well-preserved palaces; important public buildings; Baroque, Rococo, Classicist and Secessionist houses and villas; and one of the oldest city halls in Europe.
We’ll have lunch in a local restaurant.

We’ll then continue on to Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Europe. Local people call it the Hungarian sea. The lake is 50 miles long, with silky green-yellow water and mud that is frequently used for body treatments. We’ll visit the popular resort town of Balatonfüred. We’ll have dinner and spend the night at a hotel.

Breakfast will be served at the hotel before leaving for a guided tour of Tihany to explore its historic, architectural, and natural treasures. The first nature preservation area in Hungary was developed here in 1952. On the hill overlooking the town is the two-towered Benedictine Abbey. In the crypt under the abbey lies the tomb of King Andrew I, founder of the abbey. The abbey surroundings offer a stunning panorama of Lake Balaton’s sparkling water. We’ll then travel to Budapest. You’ll be on your own for lunch.
