Description

Departure by coach to visit the Monastery of St Cyril of the White Lake. This monastery was founded in the XIVth century by the monk Cyril, an exceptionally pious monk who was appointed archimandrite of the St Simeon Monastery in Moscow, an honorary title granted to the superiors of monasteries. This is one of the oldest monasteries in Russia and the largest in Northern Russia. The name of the fortress refers to Belozersk, which is situated on the White Lake near the town of Kirillov on the territory of the Principality of Belozersk. At the beginning, the monastery was made up of wooden houses and a wooden church surrounded by ramparts, and it served to protect Muscovy against incursions by the inhabitants of the Republic of Novgorod and at the same time was a trading centuries with the regions to the North, especially for salt and fish. But gradually the monastery began to take on the air of a fortress, then a place dedicated to religious worship, made up of a vast collection of fortified, cultural and domestic structures. Return to the boat.
