Tindari was settled during the Bronze Age. The Greeks re-settled it in 396 BC, and it became a Roman city 60 years later. By the 19th century, the site was deserted, but the name was retained by a church, standing on the most elevated point where the city once stood. This is the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna of Tindari, and visitors come from around the world to see the legendary statue. Inside, the sculpture of the citron wood Virgin and Child is said to have reached Tindari in an attempt by the faithful to keep it safe from the 8th-Century Byzantine Iconoclast movement. You'll learn about the other legends surrounding the statue during our visit.
