When the holiday season arrives
Articles
When the holiday season arrivesChristmas and New Year, everywhere in the world, trigger a moment of well-being, joy and serenity that takes us back to our roots, our history and our values. Christmas fir trees decorate cities and villages to show us that the time for invincible festivities has arrived. We are thinking about all our associates, their families and loved ones and hope they enjoy the holiday season in keeping with their traditions. They are French, German, Austrian, Hungarian, Portuguese, Filipino… Let’s see how they celebrate the arrival of the New Year. To bring a touch of the exotic to our festive tour, we wanted to know how Christmas is being celebrated in Southern Africa. Why? Because CroisiEurope has found an anchoring point there for a safari-cruise offered for the last two years around the Chobé national park. These trips always bring us into close contact with local populations. Indeed, the moment has come to have fun around wonderful meals, and to wish everyone the best for 2017: happiness, health, family joy, professional success! RITES AND TRADITIONS There is magic in the crossing over from the old to the new year. Rites, superstitions… The 31 December, at the moment when midnight chimes, a little everywhere in the world, all hopes are crystallised. We all call out wishes of luck and good fortune and we bury the year that has just come to an end in good spirits. In France, we kiss each other and wish each other “Bonne année” (happy new year), preferably under the mistletoe to bring luck and we uncork the champagne. ...And you, how do you proceed where you live? In Portugal: Bom Ano Novo! Saude! Tchim tchim! In Portugal, at midnight, you have to eat twelve raisins, as many as the strokes that strike, without saying a word between each one, but making a wish for the twelve months to come. In Spain: ¡Feliz ano! ¡Salud! In Spain too, we eat twelve raisins to the twelve strokes of midnight and while making wishes. Another tradition says that we should wear red undergarments. In Hungary: Boldog Ujévet! Egészségedre! The New Year’s meal is placed under the aegis of prosperity with a lentil dish. Then we eat baijglin – a Christmas cake with poppy seeds. In Budapest, the crowd overflows in the streets of the city, the fireworks crackle on the banks of the Danube. In the Philippines: Mabuhay! On 31 December, a public holiday for them, Filipinos make a deafening and joyous din to chase away bad luck. Roast suckling pig, the lechon, is the favourite dish at the midnight feast which includes lots of rounds things: fruits, sweets – as circles are supposed to bring luck. In Germany and in Austria: Gutes neues Jahr! Prost! The Germans want to know what to expect. They melt, over a candle, a little piece of lead that they drop into cold water. As it sets, it gives rise to a little sculpture whose shape they interpret. Austria is the country of the famous Viennese waltz. When midnight strikes twelve times, everywhere in the country everyone turns round to the sound of “

The Balkans - Danube river: off the beaten track cruises (Parts 2-3/3)⛵ From the Danube to the Tisza river in the heart of authentic Hungary What better discovery than that of the Hungarian art of living? Our cruise from Budapest to the Tokaj region along the Danube explores the whole dimension of this Central European country which seduces as much by the historical, architectural and cultural aspect of its big cities as by the impressive serenity that reigns in the Great Southern Plain. We propose you to start in Budapest by visiting the royal castle of Gödöllö which was the favorite residence of the Empress Sissi! Next stop-off: Novi Sad, a true showcase of Serbian culture. After that, ensues the cruise on the Tisza river tributary - also penned the "biggest Hungarian river" - in the direction of Tokaj. You will admire wild and beautiful landscapes whose nature has remained unspoiled and whose authentic traditions echo at each halt. ⛵ From Berlin to Copenhagen, via the beaches of the Baltic Sea Germany, Poland, Denmark. From big cities to small islands whose unique splendor will undoubtedly captivate you, this cruise along the Havel, the Oder and the Baltic Sea is a pretty exhaustive overview of Northern Europe. After Berlin, the German capital, you will head for Poland, to visit the Cistercian monastery of Chorin - which is one of the most iconic Gothic buildings of Brandenburg - and Szczecin, a large port town located on both banks of the Oder: resolutely modern - culture holds there a singular place - it can be characterized by its Art Nouveau architectural style typical of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The journey continues on the shores of the Baltic Sea where two islands of breathtaking beauty enchant visitors with their peaceful landscapes: • Usedom island, among the favorite holiday resorts of Emperor William II thanks to its fine sandy beaches, lakes, peat bogs, dunes, pine or beech forests ... • Rügen island, whose pristine chalk cliffs and abundant incredibly green flora tower over the blue sea. It is the largest known German island. After a stroll across Stralsund, a popular city with a lovely typical architecture, the passengers leave the boat and reach, by ferry, Trelleborg in Sweden, last stop-off unti Copenhagen, the capital of the Kingdom of Denmark, where they will spend the night in a pleasant hotel.
The 6 must-see attractions of Venice, Italy [Part 1/2]

The 6 must-see attractions of Venice, Italy [Part 1/2]By turns stunning and deeply moving, the city of Venice is truly irresistible. This cruise along the Pô river in Italy offered me to discover the Serene for the second time. To be honest, among all of the (many) cities I’ve had the chance to visit, Venice is by far my all-time favorite. What strikes the most here is the place’s overwhelming authenticity and exhilarating sophistication. …And that is quite naturally how I found myself wandering and indulging in a few blissful strolls in the heart of one of the most enjoyable urban labyrinths ever… Planning a stay in the region and don’t want to miss any of it? Let me please guide you and share with you my very own Venetian absolute ‘to-do list’! 1. St Mark's Square Undeniably the most emblematic place of the city and its epicenter, St Mark's Square is an obligatory stop where 99% of the visitors pass. There’s a reason why Napoleon Bonaparte did call it "the most elegant salon in Europe"! It is bordered by some of the most beautiful monuments of the area: starting of course with the Saint Mark’s Basilica, jewel of Renaissance architecture with its marble facade and gilded frescoes. The Doge's Palace stands right next to it and, in its center, the tallest building in whole Venice: the Campanile, on top of which one can admire a staggering view. The arches surrounding the square accommodate renowned cafés, where you can enjoy the bittersweet symphony of open-air bands. At night, the square literally transforms and lights up, gradually abandoning daytime activities to give over to evening pleasant meditation. St. Mark's Square is, in a word, fantastic. Ideally located and close to the main attractions of the city. However, it is indeed its particular atmosphere, the never ending ballet of birds and the soft melody of Caffè Florian ‘s violins that make it unforgettable. 2. The Doge's Palace The Doge's Palace, overlooking St. Mark's Square, is another obligatory stop during a stay in Venice. I urge you to go there and take a few hours to visit what was once the rulers’ fiefdom of one of the biggest trading cities in the Occident. The exterior is of marble; just like the interior, where the white stone magnifies the vast inner courtyard. Yet, it is only once one has climbed the first stairs that the edifice reveals its secrets. Centuries of a fruitful business’ opulence reflect here, where from floors to ceilings, frescoes and wall paintings prove of an untold richness. [...] ➡ More in our next article next week!
